NaoShift from June to October 2026: everything that changed
Acting on VMs, one view across hypervisors, backup, SAN arrays and NaoShift Portal, the alternative to VMware Cloud Director: a look back at everything shipped from June to October 2026.
In June, NaoShift was first and foremost an analysis tool: you loaded an RVTools export and read risks and opportunities. Four months later, it is a multi-hypervisor operations console, continuously connected to your platforms, your backups and your storage arrays, and able to act when you allow it to.
This look back covers everything shipped between June and October 9, 2026. The main themes come first, followed by the detailed list month by month. From October onwards, a release note will be published on this blog every month.
Acting on VMs from NaoShift Core
The machines you saw in the inventory can now be operated from the same screen. Operations teams have about twenty actions on VMware vSphere, Proxmox VE and XCP-ng:
- power: start, clean shutdown, reboot, suspend, resume;
- snapshots: create, revert, delete;
- migration of one or several machines to another node, by drag and drop in the tree;
- configuration: CPU and memory, disk extension, network adapter (network, VLAN), ISO mounting, guest tools, virtual hardware version;
- network isolation of a machine without shutting it down, clone, guarded deletion;
- high availability for a machine or a cluster, and node maintenance mode.
Actions are launched with a right-click in the tree, from the "/" command bar on the keyboard, or from the row of an alert or an opportunity (with recommended sizes prefilled). A task tray follows running tasks, even when you switch pages. The remote console opens in the browser, with no VPN and no thick client.
The screen no longer shows only the last collection: when a record opens, its state is read again from the hypervisor, and the collection serves as a fallback. A machine that moves to another node is followed in the tree.
Deploying a VM from a template, with your company's cloud-init snippets, is available on Proxmox VE, and in early access on vSphere and Xen Orchestra.
The principle does not change: read-only by default, write access enabled per target with a dedicated account, logged before execution. Only users with the Operator role can act.
One view across all your platforms
Collection goes through an outbound agent installed on your side: no inbound port is opened and nothing is installed on the hypervisors. The agent updates itself. Available connectors:
- VMware vSphere;
- Proxmox VE, LXC containers included;
- XCP-ng and XenServer through Xen Orchestra, the management tool from Vates: inventory, performance, console and backups;
- Nutanix Prism Central, AHV clusters, in early access;
- Microsoft Azure, whose VMs join the inventory like any other;
- and, as before, RVTools and LiveOptics file imports.
When several sources coexist, every current-state page merges the latest healthy collection of each one. Historical charts are built source by source. The inventory has grown: virtual switches and port groups, resource pools and vApps, each platform's own high-availability mechanism, tags, and disaster recovery replicas (they are no longer suggested for deletion). A map of network traffic between VMs, fed by the hypervisor's NetFlow/IPFIX export, helps split a migration into waves without breaking a dependency.
Since October, host hardware health is collected as well: sensors and disks seen by vSphere, SMART status of disks and ZFS pools on Proxmox VE. Failures become alerts.
Backup, seen from each VM
For every machine, the question is simple: is it protected, and since when? NaoShift connects to:
- Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam Enterprise Manager, Veeam 13 included;
- Commvault;
- Proxmox Backup Server;
- Xen Orchestra backups;
- Rubrik Security Cloud, in early access.
The Backup page can be read by connector or by technology. It shows jobs, repositories and sessions. Each company sets its RPO, RTO and coverage objectives, and VMs outside the objective are raised as alerts. Repository capacity is tracked over time, with a forecast saturation date. When a repository lives on a known array, NaoShift checks the 3-2-1 rule and the presence of an immutable copy.
SAN and NAS arrays in the same view
Storage arrays join the inventory. NetApp ONTAP is available, with a least-privilege collection account. Dell PowerStore and Pure Storage FlashArray are in early access. All three share the same neutral model: controllers, pools, volumes, LUNs, host groups, shares and replications.
The link between the virtual world and the array relies on matching identifiers (NAA, WWN, IQN, NFS exports), never on similar names. When identifiers match, a datastore is attached to the volume behind it, and a VM to the array serving it. This link is used in several places:
- array risks are shown on the datastores and hosts that depend on the array;
- a SAN tab in capacity planning gives the saturation date of every array, pool, volume and LUN;
- arrays appear in the topology, below the datastores, with their performance;
- LUNs presented to no host become opportunities, priced in euros;
- configuration changes enter the change log, and the array enters the root cause investigation.
A few operations on a volume are possible: snapshot, capacity, protection policy. They go through an allowlist of permitted actions. No deletion is possible, and growth beyond the pool's actual free space is refused.
NaoShift Portal, the alternative to VMware Cloud Director
Since the end of the VCSP program, many hosting providers and MSPs need to replace VMware Cloud Director. NaoShift Portal gives them a white-label portal, managed from NaoShift Core. Each end customer manages their own machines there, within the limits you set.
For the end customer, the portal provides:
- virtual datacenters, a template catalog and VM deployment with its size and IP address;
- console, snapshots, disk extension and network adapter connection;
- an activity feed, notifications and action history;
- sign-in with a portal account and two-factor authentication, or with the customer's OpenID Connect identity provider.
For the hosting provider:
- tenants, quotas, networks and IP addressing;
- themes with your colors and logo;
- consumption statements, valued with your rate cards and exportable to your billing tool (NaoShift does not issue invoices).
The portal is available on Proxmox VE. It covers a hosting provider's everyday VCD use cases, without providing a complete isolated network environment (edge, NAT, security groups). The next platform is XCP-ng with Xen Orchestra, the ecosystem of the French vendor Vates. Design is under way, and the date will be announced once it is reliable. NaoShift Core already covers XCP-ng: collection, actions, console and backups.
Understanding and deciding
- Root cause investigation: start from a machine. The investigation gathers its dependencies (node, datastores, array, network neighbors) and a single timeline (actions, consoles, changes, risks, backups, hypervisor and array logs). It exports to PowerPoint or PDF.
- AI assistant and MCP server: query your infrastructure data in natural language, from NaoShift or from your own AI client, on anonymized data.
- Composable reports: sections of your choice, presets, your company's PowerPoint template, generated in English or French.
- Capacity planning, recommendations and simulator: every recommendation is priced with your company's reference costs (€/vCPU, €/GB, energy, licenses, maintenance). The simulator models a failure or a change before it happens.
- Transformation Studio: sizing and TCO compared across platforms, based on sourced public prices and generic server templates.
- Daily email digest: every morning, what changed, never with a machine name in the email.
Open, and under control
- Public operations API and
naoshiftCLI: inventory and actions with an API key, within the key's scope. - OpenID Connect SSO: Entra ID, Okta or Keycloak.
- Audit trail: every sensitive action is logged, and the trail can be forwarded to your log collector (webhook, Splunk HEC, syslog over TLS).
- Stronger security: API keys and tokens stored as fingerprints, secrets encrypted at rest, agent binary downloadable only with proof of enrollment.
- On-premise edition, including air-gapped environments: one-command installation, signed packages, lightweight updates. The AI assistant works with an internal AI server.
- Full English interface: emails, reports and analyses in each user's language.
- Free plan: 3 nodes, 150 VMs, 1 user, 1 backup source and 30 days of history, with online sign-up.
